Comments
Dug a pit on an almost due east face at 9000' in the Steam Mill area. Snow depth varied between 155-165cm. 3" of fluff over 1/2" thick rain/rime crust and lower snow was pretty solid below, although shovel shear found two layers that slid cleanly with significant effort. Weaker snow still present at the bottom but, we got an ECTX and no action from a rutschblock test either. Seems that areas of deeper snow have reduced likelihood of skier-triggered PWL failures. I'm still wary of areas with thinner snowpack. Temps ranged from -10 at dawn at Franklin Basin to just over freezing on sunny east/southeast faces with icicles on sun exposed trees. Some wind and melt crust has developed in more exposed areas.
