Surface conditions were generally new and wind blown snow from yesterday that started out light early in the day but was much more settled and dense by the end of the day likely due to the warming. In our pit at 7600' on a NE aspect, we found this is sitting atop right side up snow from the last storm cycle sitting on top of a stout pencil crust (10cm thick). The pencil crust about 50cm down was paired with a decomposing 1F crust underneath sandwiching 0.5-1mm mixed forms between, which produced a CT 22 BRK as well as an ECTP 30 in a pit dug by another party at a slightly lower elevation on a similar aspect. The pencil crust that is breaking above the mixed forms weak layer is producing test results, although in its current stout state I would think it would be hard to trigger on skis. However, as the crust below it and the pencil crust itself decompose (not to mention warming in the forecast), we will see how it plays out and it is still on my radar. Average snow depth around our snow pit was 150cm with some slightly shallower areas. It seems like this setup is fairly widespread in this zone. Overall snow stability was good today and surface conditions were nice for the up and the down.
