Forecast for the Salt Lake Area Mountains

The avalanche danger is LOW and avalanche conditions are generally safe. Watch for isolated pockets of lingering wind drifts at the mid and upper elevations and wet loose avalanches on aspects facing east/south/west as well as low and mid-elevation northerly aspects.

Weather and Snow
Under clear skies, the mountain temperatures are currently in the mid to upper 20's °F across the range. Winds are generally from the west and are blowing 5-10 mph with a few wind sites gusting into the 20's mph.
Today we will see plenty of sunshine with temperatures climbing into the upper 30's and low 40's °F at 9,000'. Southwest winds will increase slightly as the day wears on, with speeds of 10-20 mph across the upper elevations as another dry cold front crosses Northern Utah later this evening. Starting Tuesday, the weather gets more interesting; stay tuned.
Recent Avalanches
Another Glide Avalanche was reported in Broads Fork yesterday. This slide's exact timing is unknown, but it's a good reminder to avoid these steep, smooth rock slabs in Broads Fork this time of year. (Pic: Donner)

Avalanche conditions in the backcountry are generally safe, with two concerns to keep in mind:
1. strong winds from the past two days may have created isolated pockets of wind drifts at mid and upper elevations. Although these drifts should be small, you want to avoid getting caught in one in steep, consequential terrain.
2. strong sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures today may produce small, wet avalanches on aspects facing east, south, and west, as well as low and mid-elevation northerly aspects.

The glide avalanche in Broads Fork on Wednesday and Friday is a good reminder this avalanche problem will be a threat for the rest of the spring. It's best to avoid terrain in Broads Fork and Stairs Gulch this time of year as the snowpack on these smooth rock slabs can release at any moment.
