After doing a few Laps on Main Pioneer Chute and the East facing shoulder on Friday. Myself and 3 others decided to Give the Seagull a poke today. We accessed from Milly peak skinned up the Wolverine Bowl into the Ridge between Tuscarora. The Typical west wind was blowing across the Milly shoulder s we began our ascent and tapered in intensity as we got up higher on the peak. As we ascended the Ridge rhe Wind was light and swirling a bit , but remained predominantly Westerly. There was not a significant amount of snow being transported. As we stood Above the seagull we noted and discussed that there was likely cross loading in the top section of the chute . We specifically had eyes on the steep panel on the riders left side that seemed most suspect about 100 ft down. We chopped a few blocks at the top of the run and sent them down to see if anything would move. We didn't get any movement from our blocks and decided to tip toe in.
Our discussed plan was to ride the chute in 2 parts. First: riding the top and tucking up riders right into a protected spot that sits below a wall and out of the main Chute itself. Once regrouped, we would ride the remainder of the line down and out into the apron, ending on a large roll in the bowl below. I dropped first ski cutting the about 30 ft down into the chute aiming towards a grouping if Rocks on the left "wall" just above and the the riders right if the Suspect panel. Again no movement.
I then decided to Drop in towards the protected nook on the riders right. Either upon drop in or my first turn The slab began to crack and ripple out in front of me. I immediatly rode right towards our first stopping point and stopped safely on a prominence of snow and watched as the slab ran the entire distance of the chute and out into the Apron. The slab was about 8 inches thick at its fat point. I Radioed my partners and let them know what had just happened as they were not in a position to see me one i was tucked up on the right. Albiet spooked, We decided to keep with thewith the original plan and my partners dropped to me one by one without incident. Once regrouped, we again rode the remainder of the line one by one each ending on the large roll at the back of the bowl below.
Once I was off the line and looked back. I could finally see how far the slab and sluff had ran. Running about 600-700' in vert and deep into the apron below in 2 prounced fans.
My partners rode the rest of the line without incident and we regrouped in our discussed location.
Take Aways:
We had a plan, We communicated well, and in the face of the expected hazard our plan kept us safe and we were able to shred the Seagull
Regardless of the plan, It was a shock to watch the slab ripple and crack out in front of me. Things could have gone much differently. I'm greatful to have comeout unscathed and this will be a heavy lesson learned today.
